CHAPTER IV - CONFESSION (by the teacher)

1.  After analyzing all the clues, the police reached to the following conclusions:

- The murderer wasn’t Mr. Carter because he was with his wife at that moment. Mrs. Croft version supported the Carters. The only witness who disagreed was Mr. Dupon.
The murderer couldn’t leave through the door because the Carters and Mrs. Croft where in the landing.
- The murderer couldn’t leave through the windows because the shutters were closed.
- The only way the murderer could leave was through the chimney, but he/she needed someone’s help. Then, the testimony of the drunk man should be considered valid.

     2.  Mr. Dupon and Mrs. Carter’s testimonies weren’t so clear. So, they decided to investigate:

MR. DUPON
MRS. SMITH
Could the murderer leave through the chimney?
French origins. Maybe what Mr. Carter heard was a man saying: ‘Dépêche toi!’
The footprints coincided with her shoes.

She was dirty and nervous when she came to the news-stand. Why?
Both of them accused Mr. Carter. Which was the motive?
Are they accomplices?

Everyone agreed that Mrs. Smith attitude after her husband’s death was really peculiar. Then, Mrs. Carter wanted to take revenge because they had accused her husband being innocent.

One night, she heard Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon whispering and she thought that they were planning something. At 11th o’clock that night, she watched them hurrying downstairs to the basement and Mrs. Carter decided to call the police.

When they arrived, they caught them red-handed. Mrs. Smith was hiding something under a great amount of gardening tools; Mr. Dupon, on the other hand, was carrying some bags. The police killed two birds with one stone. The bags that Mr. Dupon was carrying contained the stolen money from the bank and Mrs. Smith was hiding a razor, the crime’s weapon.

Some neighbours were gossiping in the landing while the police arrested Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon, “Do you know who the murderer is?” asked Mr. Pollard, “The police didn’t allow us to see anything, but I could heard that the weapon was hidden under some tools, I think that the murderer could be the gardener” said Mrs. Croft, “Who’s the gardener?” Mr. Pollard asked “I don’t know!” said Mrs. Croft.

The police interrogated Mrs. Smith and she confessed what happened:

-     The night when my husband arrived so late I thought he was with Mr. Dupon. So, I came to see Mr. Dupon and he told me what they had done. They had robbed the bank. Mr. Dupon has always loved me, and he said to me that if we killed my poor Marc I could marry him and we would be richer and happier. I agreed. I became the accomplice of my husband’s accomplice. We decided to kill Marc. He was sleeping when I came into our bedroom and I killed him with a razor. Mr. Dupon was waiting for me, he helped me to climb through the chimney with a rope and then we went down in the elevator. I went to the news-stand and he went upstairs because we know that our neighbours were there. Mr. Carter was innocent, but I couldn’t argue about this in that moment Mr. Dupon in that moment.

After this confession, both of them ended up in jail.

  2. Yeaaahhh! :))) We were riiight! jajja Mr. Dupon and Mrs. Smith were accomplices! And we also said that the razor was the weapon and that the murderer was Mrs. Smith. She was dirty because she went out through the chimney and she needed the help of other person, who was Mr. Dupon. We didn't say nothing about the basement. I thought that it was a part of the flat, because in the story the drunk lived in the attic, but the basement wasn't mentioned. At the beginning Mr. Smith was happy because he wanted to have a garden, the title is because the person that robbed in the bank was Mr. Smith and he was a gardener. We said all the time poor Mr. Smith, but he was guilty as Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon!

  3. Weee it was obvious! Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon accused Carter and we said that he was innocent, we guessed that they were the murderers. The weapon was a razor and we also guessed. I agree with Moon because we don't think that the basement was important in the story and we thought that they hid the razor in the attic because it is near the chimney. We coincide that Mrs. Smith was dirty because she went out throught the chimney. I agree with Moon in the selection of the title I think that the gardener was Mr. Smith and he wasn't innocent

  4. The murderers were Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon, we have the same in our chapter. Mrs. Smith was dirty because she escaped through the chimney and they accused Carter, but he was innocent. We have the same in our version. I agree with my classmates, because we didn't imagine that the basement was important. Mrs. Smith hid the razor in the basement after she killed Mr. Smith. I agree with what Mr. Gray and Moon said about the title. The title refer to the rob of the bank and Mr. Smith was guilty. I would like if the police arrest them in the airport!

  5. When I wrote the first comment in chapter 1 I said that Mrs. Smith was strange because she was dirty. We guessed that they were the murderers and also that she was dirty because she went out through the chimney. When Dupon accused Carter, she supported him, but Mr. Carter was innocent. The man that Mrs. Smith said in the first chapter was Dupon, but if she doesn't like Dupon and she was her accomplice everybody is guilty in the story. I agree with my classmates in what they say about the basement. It was my idea that they hide the razor in the attic, but not. And I agree with them about the title, it's a reference to the bank.

  6. The murderers were Mrs. Smith and Mr. Dupon, we agreed in the analysis of the clues and we guessed the end of the story. What Fatty say of the airport is interesting. The steps of the fireplace was of Mrs. Smith and she was dirty because she climbed the chimney with the help of Mr. Dupon. I didn't think that the title refered to the first chapter, but now I see that Mr. Smith was talking about a garden and he was the thief of the bank. I agree with my classmates about the basement. We guessed that the razor was the weapon. Everybody is guilty, there aren't innocent people here.

  7. I'm Croquettes, Mr. Dupon wasn't the killer, he was accomplice of Mrs. Smith. The two are guilty. I agree with my classmates, Mrs. Smith climbs the chimney, go dirty to the news-stand and after she hides the razor in the basement, but we thought in the attic because it's next to the chimney. I disagree with the title, I think that the police find the razor with the tools of the gardener and they think that the murderer it could the gardener

  8. I agree with all my classmates about the title because in the last chapter you say that the police killed two birds with one stone, the rob of the bank and Mr. Smith's murder. From the beginning I said that the murderer was Dupon, but he was Mrs. Smith's accomplice. We forgot to talk about the basement, it was an obvious place where the police could search clues
