CHAPTER I - OUR OWN GARDEN

Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived in a small and noisy house at the centre of Viladry. Mr. Smith was an irresponsible man that was always in troubles. His wife was a very patient woman and she suffered a lot with Mr. Smith's bad habits. At about 10 o'clock in a winter's morning Mrs. Smith entered their room and opened the shutters:

Please, close the shutters! I have a terrible headache and that shadows from the street disturb me – shouted   Mr. Smith.
Shadows! I’d like to know why you arrived so late last night – Mrs. Smith asked.
I was working, you know that we need money or we’ll have to leave this house – replied Mr. Smith.
Working? Have you found a new job? – she asked.
Uhhm...yeah...it could be called a job! Please, let me alone! I want to sleep.
Why are you so mysterious? Gardeners don’t work at night – said Mrs. Smith.
Gardener? hahaha better than that, honey... – he laughed - We’ll have our own garden! We’ll become as richer as...
Oh...no, no, no...– Mrs. Smith interrupted astonished- Please, tell me that you haven’t been with... you know that I don’t like that man...Tell me that you haven’t been in troubles again... I prefer not having anything to live on to having something to do with that man - she said.
Please, I want to sleep! Let me dream with that beautiful garden we’ll have... – Mr. Smith said

Mrs. Smith shook her head and left the room. She knew that something was going wrong...

  • What do you think about the title?
  • Which words (verbs, nouns, adjectives) do you think will be significant for our story? Some of them can be related to Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’. Check your list of vocabulary and try to identify them. Why do you think they are here?

  1. I think this title is because in most of mistery stories, the gardeners are the murderers.
I think in this story the murderers are the protagonists. The words that appears are: Shadow: Because her wife saw a shadow and she faded and when she got up in a different part of the house.
Shutter:Because one object of the murderer got catched in the shutter.

  2. I think you selected this title to the story because one girl said that there is always a gardener in this stories and all the class agree. The shutters will be significant because if happens the same that in The murders in the rue Morgue the orang-outan climbed the shutters to go to the house

  4. If Mr. Smith works as gardener the title is because he will kill a person. I agree with Moon because Mrs. Smith is nervous because she thinks that her husband has problems and the shutters are significant because in The Murders in the Rue Morgue when the witnesses went to the house the shutters are closed. Dupin investigated that the orang-outan went to the the house climbing a kind of strange shutters

  5. I think that the title is like this because the husband employs a gardener, and he is a suspect.

The crime weapon is a shutter

I think that the word "astonished" appears because the man who is mentioned in chapter 1 is the murderer of Mr. Smith

    The gardener can't live on

  6. I think that the title is because there was a rumour that a person killed some people and they think it could be the gardener.
The words that appear in my list are Shadow, because the wife see some shadows and she is afraid; shutter, because I think a shadow of the man spies the wife through the shutters.

  7. I agree with my classmates. There are many stories where the gardeners are the murderers.
The words that I read in both stories are shutters, astonished, shadows and live on. I think that the most remarkable word of all of them is shutters because that was the thing that helped the detective to solve the mistery.
I think that Mr. Smith has robbed something because he says that they will can have a beautiful garden and they had nothing to live on before.
